Monetaria moneta

Family : Cypraeidae

Monetaria moneta, Cypraeidae

Common in tropical Indo-Pacific, the Monetaria moneta was, like the Monetaria annulus, traditionally used by the local populations as exchange currency and for particular magical rites. The shell, not bigger than 3 cm, is usually pale greenish yellow-grey. The protective mantle covering it when the mollusc by the evening leaves its shelter for grazing, is very elegant, usually brown with dense stripes that reflect the colours of the shell. As usual in the family of Cypraeidae, are not absent numerous papillae, simple or ramified, with sensory functions © Giuseppe Mazza
